George Carlin died of heart failure at Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica around 6pm PDT yesterday after being admitted for chest pains that afternoon. The Grammy-winning comedian, author, and counter-culture hero was well known and much loved for his dark humor that touched, grazed and pummeled on topics of politics, religion, psychology and the taboo. He was involved in a Supreme Court case in 1978 for his “Seven Dirty Words” routine (can you guess which 7?), which narrowly (5-4) affirmed the FCC’s right to censor the act on public airwaves. Carlin was also the first person to host Saturday Night Live. He is often considered one of the greatest American comics alongside Richard Pryor and Lenny Bruce.
